2023 Conference – Association of Family and Conciliation Courts

Calgary Family Law Associates is pleased to be a sponsor again at the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts Alberta (AFCC-A) annual conference. AFCC is the premier interdisciplinary and international association of professionals dedicated to the resolution of family conflict.

The conference – “Transforming Family Justice in Alberta” features leading practitioners, researchers, members of the judiciary, and will discuss key issues facing the Alberta family justice system.

CFLA’s Sonja Lusignan has been a member of the Board of Directors of AFCC-A for the past six years and is happy to answer any questions about the AFCC or family law generally.

CFLA is also excited to announce another exciting event – the June 9, 2023 Annual Banquet of the AJEFA (French-speaking Legal Professionals’ Association of Alberta), with a special guest – the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Elsy Gagné, senior lawyer at CFLA, is the president of the AJEFA, a non-profit organization that was created in 1990 to promote access to justice in French in Alberta. Elsy can answer questions about the June 9 Annual Banquet of the AJEFA and about any issues pertaining to employment law, corporate and commercial/construction law, franchise law, and human rights law.

Calgary Family Law Associates is proud to sponsor the third Youth Leaders in Law Access to Justice Competition. This is a mixed media competition open to high school students across Canada. Students are encouraged to submit essays, poems, art, videos on the 2022 topic of: How can restorative justice improve the criminal justice system and access to justice and/or Canadian society as a whole. Service to Advancing Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in the Legal Profession: Rani W. Wong

Rani W. Wong practices family law with Calgary Family Law Associates and was the founder of the CBA Alberta Diversity Section (now Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee), and co-chair for several years. Through her work on the EDI Committee, Rani W. Wong also helped co-found the Youth Leaders in Law Conference to encourage young people of diverse backgrounds to consider a career in law. Rani W. Wong is also active in the Association of Women Lawyers, the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers, and was a contributor to the Law Society’s Retention of Women in Law Working Group.

Catherine E. Fox Appointed Queen’s Counsel, March 4th, 2020

We would like to congratulate our wonderful colleague Catherine E. Fox on her Queen’s Counsel designation announced by the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General on March 4th, 2020. The Q.C. designation is conferred on members of the legal profession to recognize their distinguished legal service and expertise in a particular area of law. The successful candidates will also demonstrate professional integrity, good character, and a superior contribution to the life of the community. This is a significant honor and well-deserved! Congratulations Catherine!

Originally from British Columbia, Staci received her B.Ed. from Simon Fraser University in 2013. After moving to Alberta, she obtained her J.D. from the University of Calgary and was called to the Bar in 2017.
