Laurie obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996 and her law degree from the University of Calgary in 1999. While in law school, Laurie spent the summer of her first, second and third year working with the Court Preparation and Restraining Order Program at Calgary Legal Guidance which provided legal information and assistance on family and criminal matters to victims of domestic violence. Laurie completed her articles with Calgary Legal Guidance and was called to the Bar in September, 2000.
Laurie is a member of the CBA Family Law North and South Sections and regularly attends presentations and seminars on family law to keep up-to-date with the evolving issues in family law. Laurie has appeared before the Alberta Court of Justice, the Court of King’s Bench and the Alberta Court of Appeal. She has a keen interest in parenting issues and issues related to domestic violence. Laurie strives to ensure that her clients receive the most efficient and cost-effective service in their circumstances, and she emphasizes the need for client safety first.
Laurie has volunteered her time to the legal clinic at the Women’s Centre for many years, she continues to volunteer with Calgary Legal Guidance and works on various projects related to domestic violence as they arise in the Calgary community from time-to-time. Laurie has always served as an informal resource to women’s shelters and to domestic violence victims working with Homefront. In recent years she was a member of the Calgary Domestic Violence Committee and served as a panel member of the Strangulation Working Group presenting to various audiences at various forums on the importance of identifying strangulation cases.
In her spare time Laurie enjoys squash, golf, travel, and getting out to the mountains to trek, snowshoe and to cross-country ski. She is also an avid supporter of the Alberta Ballet, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Opera.
