Another Hollywood power couple has parted ways, according to entertainment news sources. Well known to Alberta fans, Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from husband Brad Pitt, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple has asked for privacy from the press during their separation process.

While it is easy to dismiss a celebrity divorce as being fundamentally different from how divorce works for the rest of the population, it may be interesting to note the similarities. For example, Pitt and Jolie have six children together, three of whom were adopted. As part of their divorce settlement, the couple will need to consider custody of their minor children, perhaps including  reevaluation of their life insurance and other policies dictating beneficiaries in the case of their deaths.

Of course, a couple with the star power of Pitt and Jolie will be dealing with assets far beyond what most people would need to consider. However, asset division is often handled similarly regardless of how valuable those assets might be. Pitt and Jolie will be in a position of having to divide property, vehicles, cash and other assets just as any couple would.

Divorce can be a complicated and stressful process for celebrities and common people alike. This is why no matter how wealthy or well known a couple might be, seeking the support of experienced attorneys is a good place for both spouses to start in order to ensure both individuals understand their rights and responsibilities under the law. Here in Alberta, resources exist for couples of any demographic to seek help in navigating their divorce.
