A 55-year-old Canadian man who recently lost an appeal to get out of paying alimony to his ex-wife has vowed to never marry again after his latest loss in court. The man and his ex-wife have reportedly been fighting over finances and access to his child for the last 14 years.

This latest development in the couple’s case came after the man decided to take an early retirement in 2013, leaving his job for the government, where he worked as a manager of information technology. According to the Toronto Sun, the man made the assumption that since he had a material change due to his financial circumstances, that the courts would in turn lower the monthly amount of spousal support that he has been paying his wife since they divorced in 2003.

As part of the settlement in the divorce, the man had been ordered to pay $1,000 in spousal support, as well as give half of his pension to his ex-wife. Since the man now lives on the other half of his pension, he argued in court that continuing to pay his ex-wife the spousal support was equivalent to “double dipping.” The court, on the other hand, disagreed, ordering that out of his $48,000 yearly pension, he must continue to make payments to his ex-wife, which amounts to $12,000 a year.

Individuals who are facing legal issues in a divorce dispute may have valuable legal rights. They could potentially find it beneficial to learn more about these rights and may wish to discuss these rights with an experienced divorce attorney as they pertain to their case.
