Drafting family law agreements with care

In Alberta and the rest of Canada, the family law system relies on contracts that define the terms of a couple's relationship -- both before and after marriages and cohabitation. These relationship-defining contracts are important for legal purposes and they are also an important way for couples to save a lot of stress, time and money -- that is if they are drafted correctly.

A do-it-yourself marital, separation, cohabitation, prenuptial, postnuptial or divorce contract is certainly possible in many circumstances -- and there are a lot of form-based contracts that Alberta families can find on the internet that may appear appropriate for their needs in this regard. However, couples should keep in mind that the amount of money this saves now runs the risk of appearing infinitely small in comparison to the costs that could result from a poorly drafted contract that fails to protect and honor an individual's rights and legal privileges.

At Calgary Family Law Associates, we have dealt with many family law problems that arose as a result of a poorly drafted contract. In fact, even contracts drafted by family law lawyers may not always be appropriately written. Therefore, individuals in the throes of a divorce or other kind of dispute will want to select their legal advisors with care and ensure that they are excellently recommended and possess the appropriate expertise to represent them in their legal matter. At Calgary Family Law Associates, we represent Alberta residents in a wide variety of family law matters, including separation agreements, parenting agreements, cohabitation agreements, prenuptial agreements and other matters.
